How do I get water out of my carpet?

Toilet ran and I had a few inches of water about half way across my carpeted bedroom. I sopped up a good amt using all our towels, now carpet is buckled up in spots (like little hills) and wet but no longer sopping. I've been using wet dry vac but it's not real effective. Short of hiring someone, any ideas?
