Omg what do i do about my ex boyfriend now?

so after 2 weeks of no contact between us, i decided to text him just to say hi and whats up. i honestly was not expecting a response, but he did! and we texted for like 45 min, and just had like a friendly convo. at the end, he said "ttyl and ill cya" ...which he did not say after out last convo 2 weeks prior. we both really want to be friends (the reason we broke up was because we liked it better when we were just friends) and im going to college in august, so there isnt much time to be friends again. ive also gotten close with some of his friends while we were dating, so we do have mutual friends. the question i have is, now what should i do? like i dont want to hang out one-one yet, but maybe somehow something could be arranged where a group of us hang out? not sure how i would do that though.... thats just a thought tho, any opinions on what i should do next?
